Professor Lina Puckree aims to create and encourage a culture of research and to put the Faculty of Health Sciences at DUT on the map during her term of office. The Faculty of Health Sciences has significant potential that will be showcased under her directorship.

In this respect, she said, credentialing of staff, rating as research scientists, building research and supervision capacity and improving research output are important to ensure that the Faculty of Health Sciences gains recognition as a preferred Faculty.

“Community engagement and work integrated learning are specific areas in which the Faculty could lead in the learning teaching arena. A faculty research laboratory will support research in multidisciplinary niche areas. Rationalisation of functions across the Faculty will free academic staff to build capacity and improve research output,” Professor Puckree said.

Professor Puckree, originally from Tongaat on the North Coast of KwaZulu Natal, has received many prestigious awards including a Fulbright scholarship, World scholarship, Francis V. Hanavan Award, the United Nations Educational and Training Program for Southern Africa Scholarship and an International Fellowship in Respiratory Care. She obtained a doctorate in Exercise physiology from the State University of New York at Buffalo and has gained research expertise in electromyography and finding evidence for practice in physiotherapy and sports injuries.

An NRF rated scientist, she has published widely in national and international journals in the areas of sports epidemiology, attitudes to HIV/AIDS, and evidence for physiotherapy practice. Professor Puckree is also a graduate of the International Research Ethics Programme in South Africa (IRENSA), offered at the University of Cape Town.

An academic of note, Professor Puckree acknowledges that the strengths, work ethic and commitment amongst staff in the faculty together with the culture of collegiality at the University will help her in achieving her objectives for the Faculty. The warm reception and support from all at the Durban University of Technology has inspired her and she enjoys working in a participatory environment.
