Dr Lavern Samuels

Dr Samuels is a registered Dental Surgeon having qualified at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He has held professional registrations in both South Africa and the United Kingdom. During his studies he was awarded an International Exchange Scholarship that allowed him to attend a period at Melbourne University and undertake Clinical Work at the Old Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne.

He has served a term on the executive committee of SADA (South African Dental Association) KZN. He has also in the past been appointed by the HPCSA (Health Professions Council of South Africa) to serve on a panel involved in academic programme reviews. He has also served as External Examiner for a Masters programme in Health Management.

Dr Samuels has held academic positions at Edgewood College, UDW, UKZN and DUT. He also held Senior Clinical positions both in private and Academic Hospitals and Clinics. At DUT, he has held academic headships in two departments. Thereafter, he served as Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Health Sciences, during which time he acted as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences for a period. He is currently the Chairperson of DUT’s Institutional Forum and is also a Senate Representative on the University’s Council where he also serves on the Executive Committee of the Council.

He is the current Chairperson of the KZN Region of IEASA (International Education Association of South Africa). Nationally, he serves on the Directors’ Forum as well as the Management Council of IEASA. He is a Trustee of the M L Sultan Charitable and Educational Trust and is the Honorary Secretary and a Board Member of ICON (International Centre on Non Violence). He is also a Member of SAIIA (South African Institute of International Affairs)
