Mr Wiseman Madinane - President

Mr Wiseman Madinane obtained his National Higher Diploma in Chemical Engineering from the former ML Sultan Technikon. He furthered his studies with a Senior Executive Programme at Harvard Business School, Massachusetts, USA.
Wiseman is currently serving as a director at HI Tech Transformers where he mentors and coaches the CEO and the executive team. His other expertise includes consulting on business strategies and systems. He also advises on financial modelling and financing options.

His career highlights include, his participation in various multimillion Rand capital expenditure projects that resulted in Mondi Paper - Merebank becoming a global player. He was part of a negotiation team that concluded a three year long term wage agreement with the trade unions. He led a team that negotiated a new shift system, replacing a system that had been in place for more than twenty years.

He participated in the Mondi South Africa board as a non-executive during its unbundling resulting in a major empowerment deal in the paper and packaging industry and was also a founding member of the Durban Community Foundation as part of the initiative of the Durban Growth Coalition.

As the CEO of Gillmich Pty Ltd, Mr Madinane managed a R55 million budget. He was responsible for managing a staff in excess of 90 people. He kept in touch with his alma mater by serving on the Chemical Engineering Advisory Board at DUT. Mr Madinane served as the Executive Chairman of Ingwekazi Holdings.

He is also an Executive Director of Rotunda PTY Ltd and Merpak Envelopes Pty Ltd which he both partly owns. He is a 2005 Convocation Silver Tusk recipient. He hails from Clermont and his business interests have relocated him to JHB.

Mr Ntokozo Chonco

Ntokozo Chonco graduated with a National Diploma in Public Management and Administration at the ML Sultan Technikon in 1997; he also completed a Chief Executive’s Certificate in Local Government in 1998 and later obtained a B.Tech in Public management at M L Sultan in 1999. Amongst all these achievements he also obtained numerous other certificates such as the Benchmarks for Quality in Government Memphis Tennessee’s in the USA, a Housing Development Practice at the University of Natal and an Intergovernmental Relations at the University of Pretoria to name a few.

Ntokozo has been employed by the eThekwini Municipality as a Strategic Executive, Acting Head for the Office of the speaker, a deputy information officer, a acting deputy head for customer services, and deputy head of operations.

Ntokozo enjoys listening to music, watching soccer, reading magazines and watching Formula 1 Racing.

Mr Ashok Maharajh

Mr Maharajh has obtained a Master of Sport Science through the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Commerce Honours degrees through the University of Durban-Westville, and a National Teachers’ Diploma in Commerce through the ML Sultan Technical College. He is currently studying towards a PhD in Sport Science that is sport management biased. He is a recipient of a scholarship from the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Bobby, as he is popularly known, has worked as a teacher for the House of Delegates. Before retiring, after a little over 40 years of service, he was employed by the Durban University of Technology as a lecturer, senior lecturer and as a Head of Department. He was instrumental in establishing the then known Department of Sport Management. This department is currently known as the Department of Sport Studies. His other interests on campus included being a member of NUTESA and TENUSA and a member of the Convex. He served on the Faculty of Commerce’s Executive Committee as the secretary and was responsible for the Advisory Board that assisted potential students in selecting their courses.

Bobby has been actively involved in sport administration for approximately 45 years. During this period he received awards for his service to sport from the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, KwaZulu-Natal Athletics, the Comrades Marathon Association and SKISA. He served KwaZulu-Natal Athletics in numerous capacities and was the first democratically elected President of the federation, a post he filled for four years. He was an active member of the Comrades Marathon Association for about 17 years and held several portfolios during this period. He served as Chairman of the Comrades Marathon Association’s Board of Trustees from 2004 to 2008.

Mr Njabulo Manyoni

Njabulo graduated in 2000 with a National Diploma in Language Practice and later obtained a B.Tech degree in Language Practice at the Durban University of Technology. He is currently employed at ABSA Bank as a Provincial Training Consultant; he has also been employed by ABSA as a Provincial Consultant. In 2007 he was employed by the Durban University of Technology as a Lecturer and Associate Lecturer.

Mr Manyoni has been involved in the Walt Disney Cultural Exchange Program. He was also a chairperson of staff union and PRO for the Student Representative Council at the Durban University of Technology. He participated in the Commonwealth People’s Forum as a Transport Co-ordinator for the Forum delegates.

Mr Vuyani Mbata

Obtained a National Certificate in Travel and Tourism at the Technikon Natal and later furthered his studies at UNISA and graduated with a B.Tech in Travel Management. Vuyani later obtained a MBHPIL Sustainable Development qualification at the University of Stellenbosch in 2008. Vuyani is currently studying MA: Economic Development Concept and Policy Development at the Wits University.

Vuyani is currently employed at the Buffalo City of Metropolitan Municipality as an Executive Director: Economic Development and Tourism. He was also employed by the Department of Economic Development and Tourism in the Western Cape as a Chief Director of Tourism; he has also been a General Manager for Enterprise Development at the Buffalo City Municipality and an Operations Manager for Tourism at the KZN Manufacturing Advisory Centre/SEDA.

Mr Sanele Nyathi

Mr Nyathi graduated with a National Diploma in Financial Accounting in 2007 at the Durban University of Technology before furthering his studies at UNISA where he completed his B.Com Accounting. He has also received a certificate in Pastel Accounting. Sanele has had many achievements over the years such as being the Chairperson of the Association for the Advancement of Black Accountants of South Africa - DUT Student Chapter, a chairman of the Roman Catholic Youth and a general manager in the accounting syndicate.

He is currently employed by the Gobodo Incorporated Chartered Accountants as a Accountant and auditor. He was previously employed by BDO Steward Spencer as Chartered Accountant and by Sharp Labour too as a Financial Accountant.

Sanele enjoys playing soccer, cricket and participating in clubs and societies.

Mr Udeshkumar Ramsundar

Udesh received a National Certificate and a National Diploma in Computer Data Processing at ML. Sultan Technikon in 1987 and 1991 respectively. He later completed a National Diploma in Internal Auditing (CUM LAUDE) and a further two B.Tech degrees at UNISA, to name a few. He received the best student Award in Internal Auditing at UNISA.

He is currently employed at the Durban University of Technology as a Senior Manager: Financial Operations and Accounting in the Finance Department. His employment spans 26 years of excellent financial management at the legacy ML Sultan and DUT in his capacity as cashier, Debtors clerk, Finance Officer, Financial Accountant and Financial Manager respectively. He also did lecturing at ML Sultan for 18 months in the fields of Advance Computer Auditing and Internal Practice of Auditing 4. Amongst all his achievements, he has successfully fundraised R30.4 million in 2010 for the repair of the DUT’s City Campus roof and buildings. This massive injection of funds helped lessen the financial burden of the University at a time when there were competing demands for major capital works.

He served on various finance, audit, investment and other committees of the University Council as an invited Finance representative and was most recently elected as a member to serve on the Institutional Forum of DUT by the professional administrative staff. He is also current chairperson of SAAF, an organisation of debt administrators for all Universities, FET and Private colleges in SA and a few neighbouring states.

Udesh’s interests include spiritual reading, playing the Indian musical instruments, sports and community work. He is currently Treasurer and Trustee of the Merebank Sanathan Dharma Woonathee Sabha (PBO).


Dr Rishie Balkaran

Dr Balkaran has studies extensively over the years. He has obtained a D. Admin in Tourism and Hospitality through the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, A Masters Degree in P. Admin and passed with Cum Laude at University of Durban Westville, he also obtained a National Higher Diploma in Post School Education at M.L Sultan, a National Diploma in Financial Management with DMLN, B.Tech in Public Management with UDW and finally a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Administration through University of Durban Westville.

Dr Balkaran has been employed by the Durban University of Technology for over 11 years and 9 months. The latter 6 years and 7 months has been a senior academic level. He is currently serving and has served various forums at the university such as the Skills Development Training Committee, Faculty Exco, Senate, Restructuring Co-ordinator at the Hotel School, Faculty Research Committee, Senate Representative Honorary Doctoral Selection Committee and the Convocation Organising Committee.

Ms Thama Duba

Ms Thama Duba obtained an MSc degree in Applied Mathematics at the University of Cape Town, a BSc Honours in Applied Mathematics and a BSc in Education from the University of Limpopo.

She is currently employed as a Senior Lecturer (Mathematics) at the Durban University of Technology in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics She also serves as a board member of the South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) and as one of the leaders at the His People Christian Church (Durban). She previously served as an Academic Employee representative for DUT Council and the Human Resource and Remunerations Committee of Council; as Acting Head of Department and as Vice- Chair (Academic) of Tertiary Education National Union of South Africa.

Dr Erasmus Mnguni

Dr Mnguni was born on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal in Umthwalume. He then moved to Umlazi, south of Durban, and attended Menzi High School where he completed his high school education. While juggling studying and working, he decided on a career in the food and catering industry.

He completed the National Higher Certificate in Commercial Catering, at the then ML Sultan Technikon in Durban followed by a National Diploma in Catering Management at the same institution. This was followed by a Bachelor of Technology degree in Post School Education at the same institution. Following the merger of ML Sultan Technikon, Natal Technikon and other tertiary institutions in Pietermaritzburg to form the Durban University of Technology (DUT), Dr Mnguni registered for and completed his master’s degree in Food and Beverage Management. He subsequently registered for and completed the degree: Doctor Technologiae in Tourism and Hospitality at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. He has worked as an associate lecturer, lecturer, programme leader and is currently the Head of Hospitality and Tourism department at the Durban University of Technology. Before joining Durban University of Technology, he worked for the following companies:

Beacon Sweets and Chocolate as an operator in the Chocolate Department, United Building Society as a Chef/ Supervisor, Premier Contract caterers Pty Ltd T/A as Hospitality ( now Sodexho)as a Training instructor and Training officer, Royal Food Services as a National Training Manager and Training Director KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape. Other achievements are as follows:

Train-the-Trainer course through the Institute of People’s Management, Breakthrough to literacy programme through Hampton Community College, Assess the Assessor through the Hospitality Industry Training Board, Associate Lecturer Training Programme through ML Sultan Technikon, Training and Development Assessor- level 3 and level 5 through the Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Education and Training Authority.

Ms Mathuto Motumi

Ms Mathuto Motumi was a partner at Tshimo Communications, a close corporation company that focuses on social project management, corporate social investment, social development planning and communications, Public Relations and below the line advertising. She is also a part-time lecturer at the Public Relations Institute of Southern Africa (PRISA), lecturing on corporate social investment and community relations.

Prior to starting her own business, Ms Motumi was the head of the Sowetan Nation Building Projects at Makwetla & Associates. While working at Economic Justice Agency, she managed all current and potential contracts. She served as the Financial Manager and also supervised the project teams and office administrative staff.

While working at Abt Associates, she conducted research on USAID-funded projects in Southern Africa, retrenchments in the mining industry and privatization of state owned enterprises and developed social plans. Prior to joining Abt Associates, Ms Motumi worked with the former M L Sultan Technikon as a student development co-ordinator and was responsible for arranging non-academic educational / leadership programmes and the administration of the SRC and other student bodies’ funds and also served as assistant to the Dean. Ms Motumi obtained her NC: Pharmacy Sales Consultant and ND: Public Management & Administration from the former M L Sultan Technikon.

She also has a post-graduate diploma in Public Policy and Development Management from the University of Witwatersrand Graduate School of Management.

She is currently studying towards a BA: in Development Studies through UNISA. Ms Motumi is also a Council member of DUT.

Miss Motumi is currently employed as the Parliamentary Liaison Officer in the Office of the Deputy Minister, Department of Public Works.

Mr Siyabonga Vezi

Mr Siyabonga Vezi, the Council Representative, currently works for Department of Minerals Resources as the Head of Administration and Systems, in Pretoria.

  • Completed a National Diploma Office Management and Technology at ML Sultan Technikon in 2000 and B.Tech at DUT in 2005.
  • Chairperson - Transformation for Department of Water Affairs and Forestry - KwaZulu Natal in 2002/3
  • Chairperson - Employment Equity for Department of Land Affairs - KwaZulu Natal in 2005.
